Ok, I have finally decided to convert my 265G in to a discus tank. So, everything in my 90G will go in the 265G. The current stock list for the 90G is as follows:

35 Cardinal Tetras
2 Serpae Tetras
5 Albino Corys
2 Leopard Corys
5 Clown Loaches
1 Clown Pleco
1 Geo. Red Humps
16 Rummy Nose Tetras
1 Precox Rainbow
2 Albino Bristlenose Plecos
2 Bosemani Rainbows
1 Bolivian Ram
1 Beta
7 Domestic Discus
2 Wild Discus
2 German Rams
2 Apistogramma "Painted Face"

I will definitely add 5 to 10 more discus and tons more cardinals and rummy noses. I am also thinking about adding a few more loaches. Anything else that I could add to make this a nice looking tank? The tank dimensions are: 7' by 2' by 30".

It sounds like a whole lotta fun! I want a big tank like that here someday!:) Take lots of photos...:)

Are you going with any substrate? plants? driftwood?

I'd bump that cardinal number up to 100:)

This is what my tank looks like:

I will be moving all the driftwoods and plants to the big tank. I have bought some more driftwoods as well. The big tank currently has sand in it. So I will just keep it that way. Getting pretty excited thinking about it. :)

I love those wilds! The really pronounced "halo" or black ring is really cool! I really want a couple of wilds or some nice browns!

Ok, things are in motion. I have sold most of the fish in my 265G and I am very close to actually making this happen.

I am going to keep plants and do a better job than what I have been doing with my 90G.

I bought a few larger driftwoods to go in the tank, but I am sure I will need more. I will be buying more plants, but that will happen gradually.

Now, the 265G currently has fine play sand. Do I need to change the substrate in order for me to grow plants or can I get by with sand? I am going to mix some gravels in the sand as I like the look of mixed sand and gravel. What are my options? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The project is completed. Took some planning and 4 hours to complete the move. So far, things are looking good. I will post some pics when the water is clear. :)

I think giant val would fill up a 1,000 gallon tall! The discus sure love it though, don't they dnt?

Here is a pic of the new set up. Need to do something about the water clarity. Currently running one FX5 and XP4. I will be adding one Fluval 405. Hopefully, it will help.

OK, here is some more info on the tank:

Filter: FX5 and XP4, but water is not very clear so I am adding a Fluval 405 today
Heater: Rena 300W and Theo 400W, temp kept at 86F (since I don't have juvies, I may lower to 84F or even slightly lower)
Lighting: Two 196W 36" long PC units
Substrate: 120lb of Eco-complete on the sides and back, playsand with gravel mix in the front center
Plants (swords, vals, java fern, and others that I don't know the names), driftwoods, and some rocks

Now the fish. It's a long list:

8 Discus - picking up 6 more adults tomorrow
50 cardinals (added 20 more)
16 rummy nose
6 congos (new)
6 Red Pencil fish (new)
2 Serpaes
2 bosemani rainbows
1 Precox rainbow
5 clown loaches
5 albino cories
6 otos (new - getting 6 more next week)
1 Clown pleco (which I never see)
1 apisto (male died two days after the move :()
1 German Ram
1 Geo Red hump
1 male beta

It's been up for 8 days now and I am monitoring the nitrate level to determine the water change schedule. Most likely 25% every other day or 30% every three days or so. Any comments on the stocking list would be appreciated.
1 Bolivian Ram

Thanks for the suggestions on the plants. I may go down the CO2 route in the future, and will see about the lights. I have 392W and it may or may not be enough for the plants.

:D Man, that tank is sooo neat...if it doesn't clear right up, you can help with an HOB with micron filter, or a Vortex diatom.... I use the latter in cases like that & it clears & polishes beautifully....good luck & show us more as you develop it.... BTW, what is the tall, thin, grass-like plant? Wish I had the ambition to do a planted tank like that.....

I added a Fluval 405 and the water clarity has improved siginificantly. But it may be the carbon I am running that came with the 405. Don't know. Also, a lot of the algae seems to be disappearing which is a great news.

The wilds are from frybabies.com in PA. I got them for $35 each and the larger one was almost 6".

Finally picked up 6 more discus from RichieE today. Everyone has settled in and seems to be doing OK. Thanks Rich. :) Hopefully, they will start eating in next few days.

I can't find my camera, so can't post pics, but I will look for it tomorrow and try to take some pics.

Great tank, nice combination of fish:)

How are you finding the red humps behaviour?? I've tried them before and they would dig holes in the sand and bury plants and cause all sorts of dramas with the landscape....but great looking fish aren't they!! :)

Hi Rod, somehow I missed your post. Yes, love the red hump. Cool looking fish. As a matter of fact, he is my wife's favorite fish in the tank. I will have to post a pic of the guy. His behavior is fine. He doesn't dig the substrate, doesn't bother the discus nor tries to eat small tetras. He is a well behaved nice fish. :)

Nice tank, you need a UV stabilizer and your water will go Crystal clear.
better yet get a JBJ 4 stage and take the fluval back.
Discus don't need carbon.

Thanks for the kind words. Still work in progress. Here is another pic taken under different camera setting but it is about two months old. I think this is best I can do with my skill and the camera. Water is pretty clear these days. But the picture won't show it. :( You can see my red hump in the middle left. :) I will try to post more recent pics soon.
