Hey everybody, I'm Scott. New to the board and pretty new to Discus as well. My first endeavor is a 46bow, really low tech planted tank with a 5x 4" fish and a Gold Nugget Pleco in quarantine. I'll be changing over to pool filter sand this weekend, as I'm already sick of the pea gravel that I've always used in my large Cichlid tanks. Here are a few pics, and if anyone has advice about the substrate swap, shoot it my way.

Nice pics of your fish, welcome to Simply. What part of the Chicagoland area are you from?

I live in Chicago, in Logan Square. About 4 miles NW of downtown. Thanks for the kind words everybody! Just finished the big substrate swap to pool filter sand and the fish & I are loving it! I'll post some pics as soon as the dust settles.

Welcome aboard, Scott! There are a bunch of us around and in Chicago! We occasionally have informal meet ups at a LFS in Skokie called Old Orchard Aquarium. Look for a thread for our next one! So you found the Halogen Pool place ok? Was that you?
Best regards

Yeah Harriet, that was me. Halogen was really easy to find, right off the highway only about 4 miles from home. The swap over to the pool filter sand was really easy. About 45 minutes to remove all the old gravel, and about 20 minutes to lower cups of sand to the bottom veeeerrrry slowly. Thanks for all your help and advice! My Juvies are loving it!

You are welcome and I am glad it was a snap. It was equally easy for me and almost a year later it still proves to be the substrate of choice for me in this tank! I also love how well the plants root in it.
Best regards
