Major hydroelectric projects in Amazonia are under construction or have plans for construction in the near future.
The most controversial project presently nearing completion is the dam on the Rio Xingu.
Discus are no longer found in collectible quantities in the Lower Rio Xingu.
Several dams are planned for the Rio Madeira, a major discus habitat. Discus do not live in the main river, of course, but in the surrounding Lakes or Lagos. Most of these dams are intended to supply electrical power for the heavy industries of mining and ore refining plus oil and gas drilling and refining. We all know how disruptive these projects are.
It doesn't hurt us to be aware of these projects. I am mainly posting it for that reason. These are their projects in their countries and we have no say in the matter. We should appreciate our discus and wilds are legal to catch for the aquarium trade because we don't pose a threat to the population which is not in major danger yet but it may be so in the future.
