I have 4 discus and two of them show signs of breeding. I have had them for 7 months. The two that are showing some signs of breeding have things that have happened to their top fin within the past week. I have never seen it before and was wondering if any one else has. One has an extension that looks like it should be there but never has been up until now. The other one has a gap in the fin. I have some pictures I will post to help what I am saying make sense.

Discus will sometimes grow extensions on the ends of their dorsal fin. This is common in a lot of cichlids.

The gap looks like it's probably an injury from fighting/pecking. If you keep the water clean it will heal in a couple days. Look forward to more minor injuries if there is spawning going on in your tank.

Thank You! That is kind of what I was thinking but reassurance is always good.

From what I've read, the extension is normal and shows predominately in fully mature discus, and I guess the dorsal extension means the top fish pictured is a male. What strain is that? Great looking discus.

Usually the extensions do show up on the males but I've had female angels develop them before and I assume it's also a possibility for female discus.

Good luck with the pair.

Thank you. I am not sure what strain they are I just picked them up at the lfs when they were only about 2 to 3 inches.
