I know ive heard this phrase several times on this forum but ive never actually got the definition. Can anyone clarify?

Its a expression for a genetic trade in a fish, one step from get active.. it have the gen in them but not yet display it. and will get active in next step of breed.. and show the end product of the gen in the last step.

My little understanding of intermediate is that it's a term used for discus offspring that doesn't express the phenotype or physical trait of its parents yet. Discus like albino carries a recessive gene which will not manifest in 1st generation offspring. Upon the 2nd generation inbreed, some offsprings will exhibit the albino trait while others will still remain intermediates.
