Keeping the light "low" in Discus Tanks, is it a myth or reality ?

They will do fine in most light conditions. In nature there is always someplace they can find shade. This can be simulated with floating plants.
I have one room light and I do not normaly turn on the tank lights except the days that I do WC/cleaning. When they were new they didn't like the light on but now they don't seem to care. Don T.

I keep my coralife 10K 2x65 watt light on 12-14 hours a day and the discus are always out.

I have 4* T5 bulbs and I would describe my fish everything but shy :)

Myth.

This is old school thinking that has no basis in fact.

The need for low light is more myth than fact. I believe it is true that newly imported wild discus seem to adjust better in dim light rather than strong lighting. This is more of a transitional step than a permanent necessity. It is not limited to discus. Most newly imported fish seem to appreciate lower light. Remember too, that most of the time, the receiving tanks are completely bare. With no protective cover fish are extremely nervous. About the only option is to use low light levels to ease their stress.
At least this is my experience.
