View Full Version : microscopes ??
I'm looking into ordering a microscope. I'd don't want to spend more that $200 if possible but at the end of the day I'll spend whatever I need to.
Any suggestions would be a great help.
Thanks,
ShinShin

For our purposes in the fishroom, you don't need an fancy, expensive microscope. Check your local pawn shops. I've seen nice ones for a really decent price. 10X and 40X powers are what I use on mine. No need for a 100X power oil emmersion, although mine has it. If you can't find one there, ebay has them. Or, check online for a source. As long as yu have a 10X and 40X and a light source attached you're fine. I think some that come without 100X have a 4X instead.

I bought a Labomed for abought $200. It includes a light source and 3 objectives. It is definatly NOT a kid type microscope. Don't forget to buy some slides and covers. The scope won't be much help without them. Don T.
Thanks Ron - yes I read ready that thread.
I went out and took a look around at a few stores today. & wow you can spend a lot on these things. I think I found one I like for $300 - it's overkill I know but it should last me a lifetime.
I'm going to take a look for a used one tomorrow and if I can't find something I like I'll suck it up and get the new one.
thanks,
Got me new microscope today. Hopefully I'll finally be able to figure out what's going on with my fish. This is what I ended up with. It's probably a bit over kill but I'd rather get something that will last.

A local vet told me to check with some of the universities - they might have some decent ones for a good price in their surplus supplies.
