of my first batch of young 'uns, every one that hatched in spite of mom's effort to eat the eggs has survived and thrived-- at least, nine out of ten have. Number ten has a badly curve spine-- scoliosis, I gather, and is incredibly tiny and clearly ain't gonna make it. Nor, I sadly suppose, should he.
So.
What's the most humane way of dispatching this little guy? I've heard you just put them in a small vertical container of the tank water and stand it in the freezer.
I'd rather not feed him to the cat.
Uh, that thread line should read humane, not human....oops.

i use a oscar. ...although its probably not humane in any way....since i have seen him bite the head off the fish and leave the body for a midnight snack.

Some people use clove oil.

That works.
You can also use ice water (32F) put in the fish and 10 seconds later add some rubbing alcohol, death occurs within seconds.

Geez you people have been watching too many "SAW" movies! :) I've read using boiling water like with lobsters is the fastest way, no death is humane to a civil person however.

What do you do with the clove oil, exactly?

I tried the freezer method and it was horrifyingly slow- the poor thing was still moving quite a while later.

Cheery subject!

Add 12to 15 drops of clove oil to a gallon of water and shake...then add fish. The fish will slowly calm down, being knocked out, roll and slowly stop breathing.

This is double the dose that you would use to anesthetize a fish

Thank you-very helpful! Hopefully I won't need it anytime soon, but good to know.
