What filtration do you recommend for a discus tank, sponge or other. Do you recommend a barebottom or sand or small gravel?

You will get a lot of different answers here and none of them will be wrong but I always use a sponge filter and bb tanks.

I couldn't agree more. I, myself, use an xp3 for both of my discus tanks, they are planted.

I use canisters for my adults in a planted tank.

For my juveniles/grow-outs, I use an Aquaclear 110 and sponge filters in a bare bottomed tank.

I am planning a show tank, I am not into the breeding end of it.

Hi ..I use two xp3's on my 120 planted discus show tank with the spray bar attachments and get lots of circulation without turbulence. They are very quite and easy to maintain. I also use pool filter sand with some ecocomplete under certain more heavily planted areas. Love to watch the discus blow on the sand hunting for tasty morsels. HTH Sue

Isn't that over kill, 110 with water changes of 25% 3 times a wk would be plenty.

It probably is overkill, but it seems to be working ok and I figured too much filtration isn't going to hurt the fish.
