I was looking at 100 gallon tanks and one I saw was an older style without the center brace and it was roughly 72x18x18 (LxWxH). I then saw a listing for a 100 gallon on Craigslist and it was the newer style with a center brace but it doesn't look 6 feet long. I did a quick Google search and found that a 100 gallon tank is 60x18x24 roughly. Can anyone confirm the dimensions of a 100g tank with a center brace for me please? I was wanting a foot more for there to be more room to swim. Will I be more limited by a 5 foot 100 gallon tank than a 6 foot 100 gallon? I was hoping to put up 12 adults in the 6 foot but maybe it's looking more like 10 in a 5 foot??? What do you experts think?

It's length times width times height divided by 231 to get your answer. 72 x 18 x 18 = 23328 divided by 231 = 100.987 gallons. 60 x 18 x 24 = 25920 divided by 231 = 112.207 gallons. Remember this is the outside dimensions and the water sits on the inside so that is less gallons. Plus we don't fill the tank to the very top so that is even less gallons. If it was me I would put about 9 or 10 adults in the 72 inch tank and 10 or 11 adults in the 60 inch tank.

Yeah, I know how to calculate the gallonage and I got the same thing...maybe the 5 ft tank is only 21 inches tall. Regardless, I guess I should have been more clear... what is the "footprint" of the "new style" 100 gallon tank that has a center brace. Is the lenght 5ft or 6ft?

Also why would you put more adults in a shorter, taller tank? Shouldn't it be more in a longer tank? The longer tank is still 18 inches tall. More surface area is better correct? Thanks for your input.

I'm going by the general rule of one adult discus per 10 gallons. When I use to do water changes every day I would go to one adult per 7 gallons. Now that I only change water 3 times per week I have bumped it up to one adult per 13 gallons. I don't know the footprint of the new style 100 with a center brace or the footprint of the old style.

You might want to check here for new dims....

http://www.oceanicsystems.com/

http://www.aqueonproducts.com/

These are some of the more common brands. Glasscages.com is another, but they sometimes have a little different perspective on size.

Bobears: I've checked the Aqueon site before and couldn't find any 100 gallon. It must be a newer model that has been discontinued...don't know why. The Oceanic site had a 105 gallon listed but it was 4 feet long and 29" tall and I know that the tank isn't that size from the pic.

I visited the Glasscages site often this past week as I was considering going with an acryclic tank but I found a 100g setup near me that is a good deal. They were one of two sites to say that 100g tanks (either long or wide) were both 6 ft lenghts. I've seen other sites that say a 100 gallon has different dimensions but when I do the math it comes out to 93 gallons, which I think AT MOST could be called a 95...definitely not a 100g IMO. Thanks for the help guys, but it looks like I'll have to wait until I pick up the tank later today to see what the exact dimensions are.

Just wanted to update those of you interested. I picked up the tank today and it was 6 feet long by 18 inches.
