View Full Version : What if I get bigger discus instead?

I was wondering... I have a 29 gallon, and would like to get discus.

I know the best way seems to be to buy 6 juvies and put em together, then pick the few best of the batch. However, I am not sure that I can afford a new tank setup AND four additional fish.

I know that anything less than six juvies will lead to aggression problems, but what if I get 2 older discus instead - would they get along and thrive? If so, what's the minimum size in inches that I should look for?

Oh yes - I may be able to fit a 40 gallon tall on my stand so will possibly upgrade tank size for em!

I think that the 30-40 gal range is too small for a GROUP of discus as adults.. you can start growing out a group of 6 fish 2-3" ...but if you want them to really do well....plan on a tank of at least 55gal for them ultimately...even better ...larger.

If you put 2-3 larger ones....odds are..they'll fight.:(

As Rod mentioned in another thread of yours, a 29 is suitable only for a mated pair.
