You may want to start out with growing them a little in a bare bottom tank before you put them in a planted tank. OR....just start with older ones that can handle those conditions. Young ones need lots of food and lots of clean water which doesnt match the planted tank.

what whiteworm wrote is right on the money

but you could still try 5 juvies in a planted tank.
as long as you keep up with water maintenence
and you have low light plants and no co2 so you dont flush your ferts down the drain

Young discus require you to change more water than you would normally with a planted tank.

diy is fine,it doesn't cost a bunch
i was refering to the real deal with the cylindar and such
you would be just wasting co2 it every time you change water

Not a week, A day, I change 1/4 of my 55g everynight, And i change 1/2 of my bb growout tank everymorning. Its better to change a little every day rather than a bunch a week.

I agree! Especially for young discus and a planted tank, I would highly recommend growing them out in bare botttom or getting larger ones.

everyone has there own way of doing things

if there that young i would do 50% everyday
and if you cant ,do 50%every other day

i change 75% of water in my 75gl every other day
i have a 55 gl drum that i fill up to temp add amquel and at the same time i'm draining the tank until the waterline hits the tops of thier fins
pump and python do the trick every time
luckly for me i dont need to age my water
and its a bb tank with a couple a pots with giant amazon swords
