Discus growout tanks ?

Hi :)

Am wondering what is the normal sized growout tanks that people use for their juvies depending and numbers and size ?

I have some 2x18x18`s at my disposal ( i believe that they are good breeding sized tanks for a mated pair ?)

I also have some 3x2x18`s and some 5x2x18`s that i can use down the track also.

Can people please give me some idea of what size tanks that they are using in various situations.

It's a good question. When I was first starting out I heard everything from a 29 gal to a 55 gal.
Some thought a 55 was too big and the fish would get lost trying to find the food....others beleive the water quality is more important and therefore the larger the better.

I expect that as long as they don't get over crowded what you have available will be fine, you just may have to do more frequent water changes depending on the load you have for the individual tank you choose.

If you start with small fish in a 29 be prepaired to move them to a larger tank in a few months. With good food and clean water they will grow quickly.
I started with 4 in a 29 ( not ideal but it worked)
I have learned a lot since then. If I did it over again I would have started with 6 in a 29 (small fish) and plan to move them to a 55 or bigger in a few months. The secret realy is clean water. the easiest way to get clean water is regular WC(water changes). Plan on a storage barrel that is heated and bigger than you think you need! ( Discus are habit forming, you will probably end up with more tanks) Don T.

I have 4 discus tanks now but have 14 tanks in total in my house and cant fit anymore in hence changing over alot on what ive been keeping in the past(malawi`s)

Am up to 29 discus now and plan on giving them two more tanks , atm they have a 210 gallon, and 3 33gallons , plus i can give them a 65 gallon and 118 gallon down the track for growouts.
