How do you pot plants in a bare bottom tank?

This guy has plants in pots in a bare bottom tank which is something I would like to do in my grow out tank and a breeding tank.

I know absolutely nothing about plants.
If someone knows and could explain step by step, and what to use and how to care for them I would be in debted.
