One of my new 3" brilliant turqs had one of his anal fins half chewed off by the dominant discus, will it grow back?
Same with his other fins they are ragged, those usually come back id assume?
Thanks

FYI 1 teaspoon of salt in 10 gallons of water is not a bath, in fact it's nothing more than ambient levels in most areas of the world.

It works out to be about 0.01% salinity. That level would barely protect against nitrite/brown blood disease, which is generally 1 teaspoon per gallon 0.1% salinity.

A long term bath would be 3 or 4 teaspoons per gallon, 0.3>0.4%, A short term dip in pure salt water would 30 teaspoons per gallon,3.0%. This would only last a minute or so at best.

Fins, as long as the base cells and hard rays are not damaged will grow back without any help from us, in good water

It looks more like a fin rot then bullying,if its a case this discus will need a salt treatment as was suggested by Graham

Hmm i have some melafix lying around....cant hurt I guess.
Although I watched the fish do it so Im pretty sure its not fin rot as his anal fin was torn off half way and its already starting to grow a bit in 2 days.

thanks

Melafix helps with repair as well its not only for disease or rot. Stress Coat also says it helps with fin repair.

Melafix is complete junk...decent water and the fish's own immune system will do everybit as much and not add a bunch of organic crap to the water

Stress Coat is a de-chlor/sodium thiosulfate and aloe...junk for bacterial or dosease problems.....

Anything that these products are capable of doing; decent water can do better.

I agree with Graham, Products such as stress coat make no distinction between the fishes skin or their gills or nostrils. Water changes and possibly isolating the fish if bullying persists are all that is needed.

Well all is better with the bullying and the fins are regrowing quickly, I was concerned as these are my first discus, although not my first tank, I bred thousands of fire mouth cichlids a few years back! Well...turned out my two original discus (blue kobald, Had 2 months from LFS) and (red turq, had 1 week from LFS) both Hans fish....which fought terribly.....which is the reason I got three more hans discus the next week....which upon adding caused the two larger original discus to pair up and lay their first eggs, ultimately causing them to beat up the brilliant turq. Here is a link to a short video I mistakenly shot of this happening the other day. My batteries died otherwise I would have got the whole thing happening.
Thanks for the replies
