Thats an African Tigerfish. Genus Hydrocynus. I would guess Hydrocynus goliath, meaning it hails from the Congo region, but i am no expert especially in Tigerfish.

It doesn't look like a serasalmus sp to me, nor do the assistants look SA. Sure it was a piraņa?Whatever it is it's scary!

Hi,

this is Heiko and the fish shown is from the Congo river system, a Hydrocynus goliath and the record is 140 cm (almost 1.5 metre TL - that is 5 feet). So the one shown is NOT a priranha (which live only in South America and only east of the Andes), but one of the African Tiger fishes of which 6 species are recognized, but goliath is the largest.

The one shown is still one of the smaller specimens...

But together with the South American Salminus maxillosus this is the the largest Characoid on earth.

This just for your information from one who has collected in all 50 African countries as well... (except Capo Verde)

Always
