Just curious what others think or prefer.
Setting up a few new tanks and am on the fence as I have used both in the past.

Just my opinion of course, but I think those Bio-Wheel filters with the silly cartridges are junk! AquaClear has served me well for years. :)

Aquaclear for me for sure...have used both years back and the thing I like most about Aquaclear is their more consistent & efficient flow rate especially as the filter ages. I have found the bio-wheel filters are much more prone to getting clogged and in some cases the wheels would just stop spinning.

Well I agree with everyone,
Bio wheels are 1/2 the price for a reason I guess.
Thought i would ask just to make sure i wasn't spending money needlessly.

I hate to throw this one here...kind of like a needle in a haystack. I used an AC once along with a bio wheel years ago. I liked them both actually. I am currently using 2 Penguin 350s on my 55 but thats because one came with the tank and I bought the other one because it was easy to buy where I'm at. The cartridges in the penguin are junk, I use them but only for mechanical filtration. I cut a slit in the top of the cartidge and dump out all the carbon. I have 4 slots in each penguin 350. I use media baskets just aft of the cartridges and the media baskets are filled with ehfi pro substrate. This set-up is pretty good and the bio wheel is just a plus on the biofiltration. When the wheels stop turning, it's usually after a long long time and it just needs a good cleaning using water from the tank. Sorry but I guess I'm the lone ranger using the bio-wheels :o

For biological filtration you can't beat a bio wheel compared to a cansister or a box filter...Nitrifying bacteria want as much O2 as possible and the bio-wheel like a TT provides that,

For mechanical filtration any filter will really do

I got my AC500 (now the AC110) in 1993 when I started with Discus. That filter was still going strong two years ago when I got a larger tank and needed to put the tank closer to the wall and so I switched to a canister. The great thing about ACs aside from being work horses is that you can load up the filter box with media of different types, especially the big AC110. Its sort of a HOB Canister filter.

I'm curious if anyone uses a wet/dry filtration system as opposed to a Aquaclear or Biowheel? Having the sponge filter on the intake valve, a filtration pad and bio balls.

i realize none of these are wetdry vs hob :p , but here's a few links related to filtration. seems like a lot of this is just personal choice

I use an Aquaclear 125 wet/dry system with a mag7 pump and a HOB Aquaclear 50 and love them.

Thanks,

I'm an AC guy for sure. I did, however, help out the biomedia in the AC by adding an airstone on the bottom of the filter after the sponge. Seems to work well and it adds more O2 to the tank. My experience with bio-wheels is the same, they become less fit over time.
