View Full Version : Buying Used Driftwood Piece?

Hello, Our LFS has a piece of driftwood that I was considering purchasing for my Discus tank. My only reservation is that they had used it in their Discus tank at the store while they had sick Discus :sick2:. They have had the driftwood out of the tank for at least a week. They assured me that it would not have anything residual on it to make my fish ill since it has dried out.

Do you all agree that it would be safe to use since it's been out of their tank for a week or so and left out in the air? I wouldn't want to jeopardize my lovely Discus in any way :fish: Am I worrying too much over nothing?? :scared:
Thanks!

Regardless of what they are telling you, I would boil the driftwood for about 20-30 minutes. I used a huge pot for stews and my driftwood was too large to fit. I just turned it every 30 minutes to make sure that every portion of the wood was boiled at some point. Just to be on the safe side

I would not buy it. You never know what had seeped into the wood. Maybe its rotting from the center also ?? Why not just go to another area LFS and buy a different piece of driftwood. It MAY save you a lot of heart aches in the long run.

although i am no expert but if it were me ....i wouuld put it in your oven for a couple of hours (2-3) maybe 4 or more hours if you want to be really sure at 250 deg. i dont know of much that can survive at that temp for that long. never had a problem , i have done this with . play sand, driftwood ,mulch , rocks , etc.

Thanks for the responses everyone. :) The only reason I was considering it is because our local LFS's, all 2 of them, have very little to choose from when it comes to driftwood and this was a nice large piece but I don't know that I will bother taking the chance. Perhaps I will have to find a nice one out of town in the future and hold off for now. Better safe than sorry! I think that if something happened to my discus because of a silly piece of wood, I would be sick to my stomach :vomit: I'll keep searching :book:

Ted has great driftwood. I just got a XXL and a XL piece from him. They are fantastic looking! I just added substrate yesterday so it's still cloudy but here is a picture of the wood. This is a 178 gallon tank 60.5WX24.5DX29T

Nice driftwood! Thanks everyone so much for some tips on where to find Driftwood. I am rather particular as I am looking for some really neat branchy pieces which are difficult to find in larger pieces but this gives me some ideas where to start looking. Thanks again :)
