I used to feed my discus small parts of chicken liver and they loved it. Only problem was it can make water bit messy. Any of you guys feed them chicken heart or liver ?

Chicken hearts are really small. Turkey hearts are used by some. Liver of any type needs to be parboiled to coagulate all the blood they contain, hence your messy water.

getting chicken hearts is not a problem since I don't have too many discus only 8 pairs. Also I have a chicken shop near by.

About liver I used to put only small peices before water changes. This blood is bad for discus ? they seems perfer it without boiling.

The blood increases the bioload, hence foul water.

remember the liver is the filter for all things bad in the body. is that what you want your fish to injest? heart on the other hand is a protected organ clean in comparison.

Just use a nice fish like salmon, tuna or white fish. They are superior in protein

So Eddie,

You feed your discus fish? How do you chop it up for them? Were they instantly receptive? Have you noticed it enhanced their growth?

Sorry for the numerous questions, but you caught my attention there!

Oh yeah, and they devour it like they haven't eaten EVER. I simply substitute fish for beefheart in any of the homemade beefheart recipes. I chop it up and use a food processor to mix everything together. I was using a raw egg in the mix but didn't like the effects it had on my water so now I use half a rotten banana and it binds everything really good. ;)

You can see how well my fish grew in only 2 months if you see my thread "2 months later" in the photo gallery section.

Here is the ingredients from the seafood mix thread

1 cup raw tuna
4 shrimps
4 mussels (occasionally)
1 tbsp ground pellets
1 tbsp ground oatmeal
1 tbsp liquid vitamins
1/4 cup steamed spinach
1 raw egg, yolk and all (now using half a rotten banana)
1 crushed garlic clove
1/4 tsp paprika
