HITH is usually much more craterous and you can tell the skin has been eaten away. HITH will look like bomb craters on the head. These are just sensory pits on the fish's head, all discus have them.

Great pics! Do other fish have these "sensory canals" or are these specific only to discus? What do they sense with the canals?

Sure do! For example: sharks detect 'smell' so to speak and movement, electric pulses, etc...

Yes they do.

blue acara i hope you don't mind me putting up these 2 pictures i took to show examples of more sensory pits on other fish. If you do feel free to let me know and i will take them down. :)

You can see pits on both of these African cichlids towards the mouth area.

I just noticed there are may similarities between angelfish and discus.

Thanks all for the kind comments:) I was suprised by the number of canals, they are all over the head, behind the eye, under the mouth... You cant see them clearly just with your eyes.
They help the fish detect its prey and predators.
