can you use the filter you make it yourself and will it be as good as the one you bought at store? thanks

Yes, you can. Buy some foam block, cut to size. Wet and freeze, then drill appropriate size hole for lift tube. When thawed and dry, silcone to slate. Cut 3/4" tubing for lift tube to the length you want it and drill a whole in it just large enough to insert flexable airline tubing. Be sure you get untreated foam.

the lg sponge filters i buy are like 10 dollars

Most people who keep many tanks are going to look for ways to save some cash and many enjoy the DYI fun aspect. I experiment a lot but in my old age I like my sponge filters to come from a factory that makes replacement sponges available.
