Should I be cleaning my driftwood if its covered in mulm?

I'm not actually sure if its mulm or algae. Its a dark brown film covering the wood. The tank is lightly planted. Some of the plants have this thick brown stuff on the leaves too. Should I clean those out as well?

IMO; If it is mulm ..yes. I have fake plants and occasioaly I take them out and clean them in plain hot water. Don t.
