IMO; 5" is adult or near adult. Some breed after 1 year but some take much longer. Don T.

Is the 5" nose to tail or just the body?

5" is not an exact number. You can not measure a fish and say that it is an adult because it is 5". 5" is just my aproximate guess. Some fish never get over 5" but some get over 8". Some fish are 5" when they are less than a year old.
TL is total lenth ,Nose to tip of tail . SL is standard lenth, Nose to base of tail. Don T.

Generally speaking, sub-adults would be 10-12 months old. Adults would be 12 months and above. Size is not an indicator. A poor discus specimen may be 4" at 13 months, while an 11 month may surpass 6". I've had female discus spawn at 7-8 months, which again doesn't make them adults. A 14 year old human can have a kid, but that doesn't make them adults, either.
