I've had this fish for about 6 months now, it was a poor fish to start but its tail wasnt abnormal. Recently i've noticed that its tail is'nt growing out like it should, the tail has become sort of squared off at the end. Is this just genetics or does diet/enviroment play a role? I've seen other fish like this but from what I understand its not desirable. This male is part of a breeding pair.

Wouldn't have a clue Jim but you did an excellent job with him! From the September picture I would have not bought that fish but if you would have shown me what it would like in 5 months, I would have bought him. Outstanding work with him. I am guessing LFS discus. I know how it is bringing them up, lots of TLC.

My guess and just a guess is that it was damaged at an early fry stage, maybe H2O quality when it was being raised or then it could be genetics. I guess you'll know if raise a batch of fry from him. I'm thinking more on the water an early stage though and thats strictly a guess. Maybe some pro breeders can give their inputs.

Beautiful color on him though. Very nice

Yes, you are correct that is was an LFS discus. I didnt realize what I was buying. A discus was a discus to me at that point. Once I started comparing photos online I realized that he was a bit out of shape. I am pretty happy with his progress tho. The tail really does confuse me though, because you can tell if you look closesly at the old photo that its normal looking. None of my other discus seem to have that problem. I hope he keeps growing, he is starting to grow that long tail on his dorsal fin so I hope that dosent mean he has aged past the point of getting any larger. Does it?
