Started a new project for my living room last week so i thought i will share it to all you guys as well.

Bought a tank secondhand with a BTN background in it that i felt i found where cheap, BTN doesn't come cheap i most say.

The choise of Discus i wanted for this project is red/brown fish. so i went for Red covers and Rose red, 7 adults of them to this 500l tank.
here's a few of them.

I went for light color sand, 0.2 -0.8 mm sand, so fine sand its almost impossible for dirt to penetrate, easy to clean become all dirt stays on top of it:D Thats way i like it:angel:

For plants i had a bit of prob to chose what to go for, so for now its just anubias in the tank and i dont think i will have any more plants except some flouting plants, and some Monstera deliciosa that will grow over the tank and just have the roots in to the tank for the nice effect they give and work as a good filter on top of that.

Here is where im at now to day with the project, I really enjoy the tank in the living room i most say. No more TV for me at nights

The monstera is rooting as cuttings now and will take a few weeks before i add it to the tank. i do it in a windows before i add it.

The RR is from a friend of mine, he had around 400-500 of them, sold many before a accident happened to his tank, We liked them so much so i bought them up from different people that had bought them from him, so some of them where harder to grow because different treat. the RC i had about 10 of them but just keept 2 females in the end.

Thanks for the link. Natural types is what I'm all about when it comes to tanks.

I have a 90 gallon that I'm almost fanatical about keeping it as natural looking as possible.

The only two non natural looking things that you can see are the intake for the canister filter, and a small power head that I use for aeration. The return for the canister is a spray bar that is out of sight, and I use an inline heater on the canister filter.

When the plants mature and fill out some more, the intake and powerhead shouldn't be visible either.

I'm now seriously thinking about doing my own BTN background on the 150 thanks to this thread.

As Basshead said. they are mad expensive, but last forever. if you got the money they are all worth it...

About BTN so are they made in sweden from Swedish company but are exported to many countries, and i think you should find it USA as well.

BTN is very popular in sweden, see them all over the place and can buy them in many stores and lately there's a new line of them called slimline,
Slimline is approx. 10 mm thick and comes in two colours White Limestone and Red Gneiss.

And the best part, they are not so expensive:D

Maybe throw the company a e-mail and ask them where they delivery in USA or maybe a simply sponsor could arrange a bulk order to simply members.

Hi there Francis

Its nothing special or DIY in this tank,
Just 2 Aquael UNI filter UV 750 behind the BTN and a Fluval 405, the in take behind the BTN and out take i drilled in to the BTN. so its quit turbulence behind the BTN:)

Many people use the hole background as a filter aera of the BTN as a filter but i wanted to keep it simple to clean when ever i need to.

Hope this will be OK in the long run.

I bought some more Anubias to the tank and the floating plants have been added, Salvinia auriculata and Limnobium, 17 Corydoras Sterbai as well

And i have added a pair of Albino, im not really sure what kind but the looks white with some blue shine in the fins with some red, I would guess Cobolt Albinos, someone that knows for sure?

Some photos where the tank is now.

Thanks to all of you that liked it :)

But i promise i have had my share of algae but i learn something about them every time it happen, the hard way

I did a mistake to sell all my Salvinia auriculata n Limnobium (Fast growing flotingplants) and in the same moment i change the tub lights and put in reflector to them so i would have better light that i had before, now i have power glo 18000 k and Aqua star 10000k, power glo, didnt get the Rose red as fine in color as before but the plants like it better.
But now i didn't have enuff of fast growing plants and more light to handle so it exploded in Staghorn and some other friends of his, so there for i nuke it with excel/EC= easycarbo and get some fast growing plants fast, so i bought some polysperma to take care of it and about 50-70 Cherry Shrimp that supposed to be in there sence day 1.... But now its OK again for this time:D

So i have made many mistake to learn from....
Just for making it short

The tank is a:

Low light 0.35 W/L x 10 hour
Nutrients: PMDD
Co2 i use EC= Easycarbo
And follow the IE (Estimative Index) style in WC and nutrient dose...

okay, very very veerrrry jealous of that tank. absolutely AWESOME. i love the sand, the lighting, the background, wood, anubias growing on the wood, and having near the same color discus in there.

little by little i've been improving mine. still working on the plants. my discus are a mixed bunch of turqoise/cobalts with tangerine/pb's. i'd love to just keep one color scheme but too attached to give any away.

do you still have the tank set up? could we see updates? are all of the plants on the driftwood anubias?

01-17-2010, 04:06 PM
Hey Danne,

What is the bioload for the tank? In the video it looks like it's pretty densely planted with the driftwood. 8 discus? I saw a whole wack of corys, shrimp and neons.

If it's a 500L (about 130gallon) tank, how often do you change the water? I'd like to stick to around once a week to keep my EI dosing method in check.

Just curious because I have a densely planted tank with a couple schools of smaller tetras and was just running around the issue of swimming space, bioload, etc. and if I have to trim back on my plants or sell livestock.

Hi Dan:)
Im not using any plecos im only use Sturisoma and my corrys in this set up... But i know many people in sweden using l-128 l-200 on and so on with BTN.. Only the worse wood eaters will be banned, as Panaques.....

Thanks Chef, scribbles and Mike f:)

Pastry :)
No its not only Anubias, its many different anubias and many different javas ( Microsorum Pteropus) and many different moss and some bolbits on the woods... And the tank is still running and i added a photo for you but no photo session lately at the tank. I hope the best to your tank

sharkbait:)

Yes it was overload with fish for some time but its only 5 of the that livs in the tank, few went to friends breeding prog, and i lost two when my heater broken and almost boiled them all..........
So 5 discus and 20 corydoras and some tetras and 2 Sturisoma and some scrimps... Feed only 2 times a day and never use any heart mix, my fish was from BB tanks to adulthood than put them over here, dont need the same food because they dont grow no more..... An i do EI with 60-70% WC a Week, sometime i do 2 wc in the same week... I have a fluval 405 and 2 UV consider filters behind the BTN. But sure i need to prune down some greeens time 2 time so the can swim around the centerpiece of wood....

Fishkeeper thanks and nice to see that patr1ck helped you out:)

Big thanks for your intress

hi..
Am in love with your tank and have been following it very keenly.going to be setting up a tank very closely based on yours hope i do well...also i liked the initial setup with lots of the annubias rather than the last pic you posted but thats just my opinion

What was the reason you got rid of the background?

I personally thought this was the most impressive discus tank that I've seen on this forum! I can't think of a reason to rescape it! :)

Can we get a full tank shot?

Thanks yikesjason

Thanks waters10
And for your questions

I removed it because it going in to a other tank and this one in my living room i wanted a new look to it, had the BTN over 1 year and many people in sweden use the BTN so i dont find them all that... The one i had was a bit custom do... This tank i have now will not be much older either i think..... I like the hobby when it moves and i can make new plans and do them... not only keep discus:)

I really get happy to hear that you thought my old one was impressive and i hope this one maybe can be that too in time....

About full shot have to wait for a while

May I ask where someone might purchase a background like that for a 112 gallon tank? Thanks.

I was checking out those backgrounds online and they wanted 600 dollars for them?? I'd rather spend 600 on the fish. did you make that??

For plants i had a bit of prob to chose what to go for, so for now its just anubias in the tank and i dont think i will have any more plants except some flouting plants, and some Monstera deliciosa that will grow over the tank and just have the roots in to the tank for the nice effect they give and work as a good filter on top of that.

Here is where im at now to day with the project, I really enjoy the tank in the living room i most say. No more TV for me at nights

sorry to high jack but has anyone on here (who has the slimline mesa rockwall background). Have any of you used extra panels to continue it onto the sides of the tank? Or is it a no no?

I have the Mesa flatrock but didnt continue it on the sides of the tank. I dont see why it couldnt be done. Some of the other backgrounds in the display tanks on the above links are done that way. The way I see it is, its your tank do what you want with your creativity. Post some pics when you get done as I would like to see how it turned out.

Is Dizkuz still around??? Loved his tank, plants, and discus on this thread and then towards the end he mentioned another show tank he was setting up (and we never got to see!). So has anyone heard from him? I thought it was worth bumping this old thread.
