Due to my absolute love for red fish, I've been thinking.... what are the differences between a Red Clover, Royal Ruby Red, Rose Red, Santarem and the fish in this thread: http://forum.simplydiscus.com/showthread.php?t=60619 ?

I absolutely LOVE the fish in this thread: http://forum.simplydiscus.com/showthread.php?p=506773#post506773 The owner called them Rose Red and Red Clover, but these RR and RC that I've seen are more red and not this beautiful 'Rusty-brown' red... how do you assure you would be getting one fish and not the other? Seems that the appearance of a Rose Red can vary greatly.

Anyway, even if you don't have answers/explanations, feel free to post pictures of your lovely red fish here. I'm dying to see pictures of red(s), especially those Rose Reds. :)

Hi there Renee,

Bill has some very nice reds that I am sure you would like. They are a nice rusty red.

Hi Renee...and Eddie...I also like the more deeper red/brown look. The fish I have are called Super Rose Reds...they have, and show at times mood bars. I have a male who shows mood bars like a Snake-skin 11-14 of them. Red Covers are not supposed to show mood bars, or have any striping on them. RR's were at the time, throwbacks to the San Merahs. I just got some nice RGD's from Mike Beals last week, and the red is more orange, and way more pronounced than the RR's. They could actually pass for PB type of red/orange. I prefer the deeper, rust colored(natural) red of the RR's, but around by me, people like the more "brighter" types of reds. So I figured I'd breed both. I kept a larger female from my RR strain from a few years back. She has lovely shape, but she was never as red as the "super" RR's. So MAYBE there is something in a name. What I like about my current RR's, is some of them, my females anyways, who are always the reddest of the two sexes, have a blue tint to their faces, and a ring of grey/blue in their top finnage which personally I like. Right now I have a RR female with a wild blue male with fry...my other pair are two RR's together also with fry. And two more "stubborn" RR pairs that I have not gotten anything from yet...Bill

Totally amazing Bill, those RRs are so beautiful. I also like the blueish tint in the face and the ring is gorgeous. Those are some reds I could get for sure!

Thanks for the pics

Thanks Eddie...I like that blue a lot too. I wish there was more of it, and maybe more intense. I'll have to see how the fry develop, and try to cross the ones with the most blue to each other. Those types of red fish to me look best in a planted tank...Those natural colors fit right in...Bill

Yes! If you could get that blue sheen down, that would be a dream.

Good luck with the breeding program.

Hi Renee, here's some pics of my Rose Reds. The first pics are when they were first delivered by Fed Ex. Then at post #21 there's pics of how they looked a few months later. Now, color is a copper and rose/mauve, like the color of Bill's in his photos above, and the halo on the top edge of the dorsal is gone, the dorsal is mostly all colored.

Connie, that is a very different variation of what I would expect a Rose Red to be... definitely more of a mauve than a red... do you know what the lineage is for those guys? I like to lean more towards that rusty-red like what Bill has...

Nice none the less, just different...

Okay, now I see the more recent pics... BIG difference! They looks really nice, I can't believe they are even the same fish!

Did anyone see that video of the wilds that I posted? Why can't we get those in the US???? :( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k4KywiaNLCM&feature=PlayList&p=C228DE699DF513C1&playnext=1&index=45 Those are my DREAM fish!

Those wilds ARE nice. But for the most part, people in the USA will not pay high $$$ for wild fish...or any other type of Discus. As you can see by the vid...the best looking wilds are usually spoken for before they hit overseas shores...Bill

I'd buy them if someone imported some nice wilds.

The first two pics are my female from the last of my old RR strain. Back a few years when the San Merah was popular...tho that was what I bought her at...but with the mood bars she is actually a RR.(throwback) As you can see she has nowhere near the red in her as my "super" RR's. The last pic are of my Super RR's right after I got them from Mike Beals. Pretty plain. Sean, I have a male like yours with the Snakeskin barring. Wondering how that got in them...thru wild blood?...Bill

The first thing that drew me to these types of fish, and maybe because they might have wild blood in them,? was their uniform round shape. Whenever I saw any in person, or in pics, they ALWAYS looked round. Like the wild Brown Discus that I would keep in my early days...Bill

The strain San Merah was given by the person who marketed it, Mr See Chow San. Whereas Dr Sun See Seng is the President of the Singapore Discus Club and an international judge. Hope this clarifies.

Hi Francis. I don't have any "true" San Merahs...The ones I had were sold to me as such, but they had stress bars and some had a bit of striping on face. San Merah throwbacks. The real San Merah is a solid red fish without any markings...no stress bars. My Super Rose Reds from Jeffrey Yang, thru Mike Beals are just as red, with the exception of the RR's having stress bars, and a blue band thru the top fins, and some with a blue sheen on the face as well. The face is also red like the body. I agree with Al M on the size issue. The ones I have are not very large size wise. I will see if that holds true with their offspring...Bill

Thanks Darren, I am curious myself how they will turn out. Renee...to me the pics of the fish out of water look like the "real" San Merahs...No Stress bars...some of the Discus in the later pics, look like San Merah "throwbacks"=Rose Reds.(pronounced stress bars) As I understand it the San Merah's were THE fish out of this type of strain(non PB)...with Rose Reds, and Virgin Reds(don't ask!) running a close second. Tho many breeders/brokers sold the Rose Reds as Sans. Hence the confusion. The appeal of the San Merah when it came out, besides being a solid rust red/gold fish, was that it was barless...like the BD's. San Merahs and Rose Reds are two different strains....Bill
