I tried to do a search of the forum of this but nothing came up.

Plan and simple question.

Lights on or off when the pair has eggs/wigglers/free swimmers?

Thanks :)

100% leave a small night light on...I use some track lighting that I have above my breeding tanks the light moves from tank to tank depending on who has eggs/wigglers/free swimmers.

OK

Because I read online that the light can be harmful to the egg development .

Thanks

My lights are on 24/7. I change nothing, including 40-50% daily water changes.

Im like Matt(sorry Matt) I leave on 24/7 except if I am using light sensitive meds. I do WCs and dont stop doing anything I would normally be doing. IMO folks try to do something better and only make things worse.

There is a school of thought that fluorescent lights can have an effect on the development of fish eggs. A good buddy of mine with years of experience breeding all sorts of difficult to breed fish claims that the long wave UV from fluorescent lights impedes the fertilization and development of larval eggs. No scientific proof behind this statement but just years of experience.
What do you guys think?

I've never had a problem like that with my lights on 24/7.

I really would like to believe differently, My hatch rates have been from 98 percent(300 plus eggs) to 10 percent. Water is more important with my hatch rate than any other factor that I have notetaded.

I dunno.....unless you live in Alaska, 24/7 doesn't sound too much like a natural environment. I keep my fish with light timers, at night time only a nighlight (blacklights) are on. I personally feel that any fish needs a period to un-stress, regardless of whether they're sleeping or not. In the Amazon river, lights do go out at night. Besides, I got a bunch of expensive plecos (L046) that are nocturnal and will become active only when lights are out :D

Why black lights? Very high UV content.

I always try to leave the light on but my girlfriend always gets mad and says she'll just go to bed unless I turn it off.
