do they need aquarium salt?brackish water? whats the best for them?can they survive and grow in plain freshwater?
I would google search them. However, I recall when I had them regular conditioned water was what I used and they were great.

This suggests to me that they are strictly freshwater.

Strictly freshwater cichlid from Central America. Neutral to slightly alkaline water that is on the hard side is best, but they are very adaptable to water parameters.

They are freshwater and will breed like rabbits in your tank. I had a pair once and could not give my fry away, no one wants them here as many African Cichlids people just don't want a tank of them.
Very easy fish to keep and breed
Good Luck

Palue,
Your African cichlid comment puzzeled me. What do convicts have to do with African cichlid tanks?

They are not africans. But many CA/SA keepers like myself use them as breeders for live feedings, due to their quick pop doubling time. They are very adaptable and can live in almost whatever you give them. Most fish stores beg to give them away.

Oops what I meant is that they are very hard to get rid of here and so are African cichlids too. I did not mean that they were Africans, sorry for the typo.

They are central american cichlids, they thrive in bright alkaline water and need a strong current (fast flowing rivers) :)
They are very territorial and extremely aggressive when they breed :D:D
A very good beginers fish but as said above, extremely hard to get rid of (breed easily and NO one will take them back) :D:D
