In our seahorse fry tank we cut the sponge to fit almost completely inside the intake "basket" of the HOB we were using. Fortunately for us, this was an "old style" HOB where the basket is a separate piece that slips on to the extension tube. The new ACs have this basket attached as part of the tube. HOWEVER, you could cut th sponge to fit, leaving it a little longer, maybe ½", than the basket, push it down with a dowel or skewer, drill or punch two tiny holes on opposite sides of the tube through the extra sponge, and secure in place with a twist tie, zip tie, or even a plastic cocktail or sandwich toothpick.

HTH.

It does a bit more than a sponge on the outside, yes, but not really as much as you would think. I thought I'd cut the flow tremendously, but it really wasn't that bad, maybe a 10% reduction.

I am also using Fluval pre filters for the Aquaclear 70 & 110.

Hydro makes great pre filters.I use one on my ac 500.It comes with adaptors so it will fit most filters.

Look at your other post here:

BTW.. Any pre-filter "WILL slow the rate" within a few hours. That's why it's recommended that you clean your pre-filter often.

The pre filter is quite long and cut a bit out and stuff it on the other end.....this will also work too the ATI Pre FILTER-MAX #2:

YES.

I use the filter Max #3 for both my Ac70 and Ac110. Just make sure you clean it a few times a week if you are doing heavy feeding.
