Rox,

Not the best that I have seen but some of them are OK. I'm also wondering about the camera skills and angles of the pictures. They may not be doind the fish justice. I think it would be best to see in person if you can.

Best wishes!

I think only one has a decent shape....look at the heads and chins, colour and stuff...I'd be too embarrassed to advertise them for sale...

Hey there Rox, do you have Andrew Soh's book? In his book he talks about these types of deformities. He explains that they are non-genetic, and that it is caused by poor water quality, high ammonia levels and overcrowding at fry development stage.

The babies could turn out okay I guess.

Roxanne
04-03-2009, 07:43 PM
...well then that just makes me wonder, freak of nature or freak raising nature? Even the best breeders have to cull, so maybe they would have a better idea of where those percentages are really at...I've seen other deformities also, I was more getting at the mongrel dog types advertised for sale to the unsuspecting as opposed to the curiosities people keep...

True, some don't even have stomachs, from Andrew Soh's book. Wondering how they take in nutrients.

Doesn't mention anything about life span. It only mentions the different types of non-genetic malformations.

Aren't nutrients absorbed in the intestines? The stomach stores food and gets digestion started so food is more easily absorbed. Doesn't it?

Roxanne
04-05-2009, 08:36 PM
..errrrrr...good question....can anyone answer that?

I'm thinking it had to be dead cos what else?...they went around cutting fish open to check if they have a stomach? ...must have been biopsied to know they had no stomach, parts missing, extra spare parts,,etc..

Not sure but I know that alot of nutrients get absorbed by the fish through the water, maybe it's enough to keep them barely alive. :o

Well.... the fish had to live long enough to be disected. I doubt that they were cutting open days old fry. Humans can live w/o a stomach if they are on a liquid diet.

Roxanne
04-06-2009, 05:27 PM
I agree Scrib, we're on the same page...but how did they know it had no stomach? It must have lived long enough to grow, and die, to be cut open, to find no stomach. So, therefore, your original question is still a good one...How did it absorb enough nutrient to live any length of time?:)

Eddie

You would be surprised by the number of fish species that have no stomachs. Those fish in particular have extremely short gut lengths and are 100% carnivorous....any plant matter would go right through them and clean them out. Might explain why some discus do better than others on a certain diet....so much outcrossing/line breeding may have started to change their physiology internally. Wierd

Basshead,

Did the book say if they did any DNA tests to see if it was a mutation of a certain strain or fish passed on in its spawn?

Were the disected fish randomly chosen or were they already dead/dying?

This is requiring too much thinking for a Monday.

Hey Scribbles, it was simply stated that is was not genetic, that it was related to water during development from hatch and so forth.
