water barrel

i recently bought a water barrel(food grade for transporting olives) it has been thoroughly washed but still smells of olives, would this be ok for holding water for water changes

Fill it and toss a kilo of baking soda in there for a few days and then rinse well.

Mine still smells like coke. As long as the container is clean and chemically free then you'll just be fine.
