Hello;
I read somewhere, as a rule of thumb, you should allow 5 gallons per Discus fish. By that rule can I keep 6 fish in my 37 Tall? Tank is 30" x 12" x 23". It's an "Echo" system and I have added a UGF.
Thanks
Jim

NO, the rule of thumb is 10g/1 discus and that 37 has such a small footprint that i'd only consider putting a breeding pair in there.

it depends on the size of your fish. IMO, 6 2"-3" juvies is ok, but 6 adults is tight.

btw....get rid of the undergravel filter. replace with additional HOB, cannister, or sponge filter. additional filtration is not bad, just not an UGF

I agree with previous posters. Get rid of UGF. They are known as slow Discus
Killers. 37 is OK for breeding pair, but no more than 3 adults. Juvies Ok. Number also depends on water changes. How Often & How Much water
do you plan on changing?
Glad to see you taking on Discus!

I do a 25% wc 3 times a week vigorously cleaning 25 % of the gravel each time and I change echo filter monthly (first Saturday of the month so I can remember) water chemistry is fine at, 0 - 0 - 0, ph 6.4, kh 71.6 ppm, gh 35.8 ppm. 3rd month of cycle using 12 whiteclouds & 20 neons & 1 Glowlight. The whiteclouds are going to go swiming with my Severum and I plan to get 10 more glowlights, the one I have I got with the whiteclouds and he looks good in the tank. IME ugf are every bit as affective as sponge, and look a lot cleaner in the tank

Nice looking tank but from the look of it, I would not put more than 2 discus in that tank. Not sure I like rocks with discus but that's just me.

Is it me or it look like you have lots of algae going on the glass.

As for 37 gallon. I've used it to grow out 2" discus before and it will get crowded within a few month. The tank was barebottom with just fish.

Your tank will be extremely overstocked with that many fish even with your WC's. UG's retain ammonia and nitrates and become more of a hassle in the long run. It seems like you may not agree with the advice you've been given which is fine but you did ask. 10 gallons per Discus is the rule of thumb. Hope that helps!

Thank you. I was afarid of that. Looks like I'll go GBR in that tank and watch for a 100+ on Ebay or Craig's list.
