I have boiled and boiled and boiled and...

The water still looks like tea...

Anything I can add to the water to leach out the pieces of wood?

You can filter using activated carbon. It will help.

The tea color is what the discus love.. The tannis soften the water, looks cool and discus color out nicely.. :9)

So I've been soaking my manzanita wood for a few days and was wondering. Is the only only bad thing about not soaking the wood the tannins coloring the water? IE I'm getting some juvies soon and I'm going to be doing 100% water changes anyway so can I just throw the manzanita in there now?

Tannins aren't necessarily a bad thing and some people even try to get that look. I put a piece of wood in my QT tank and it stained the water. Wife said she likes the look.

I have driftwood in my tank and I also run carbon all the time so my color does not last very long, but through water changes the tannins will go away. They will not hurt yor fish as stated.

The wood in the Amazon isn't boilled. The color is natural and your fish will love it.

I just filtered with carbon for awhile after putting my driftwood in the tank. It had already been soaking for about 6 mos. because it just would not sink, but it still tinted my water some. If you're doing large daily WCs it probably won't tint it much if at all, but I usually only do two 50% WCs a week so my water became tinted. I don't like how it looks and all my Discus are tank raised, so I don't think they miss it, LOL!
