When i first joined on SD i kept looking for pictures of as many strains as i possibly could and i was somewhat successful but i know there are so many more strains and pics out there that i have never seen. So, it brings me to this thread. My goal is this, i want to post pictures of all strains on this specific thread for those beginners who would like to know more about the different stains out there. This would also be fun for non-beginners as well since we love pictures!. So these are my only requirements:

1: it can not be a picture of a wild since there is a site that already has ton of them and my goal is to cover man-made/hybrid strains.

2: it has to be a sub-adult or adult discus, no juvies what-so-ever. The reasoning in this is so that we can see how they will eventually look fully grown. i edited this to include sub adults because I already see that it's somewhat difficult to find shots of real adults and a little more easy to find sub-adults. an adult is preferable but sub-adult is also acceptable.

3: it has to be a good quality side shot of the discus. no blurry pictures please because ultimately what we want is just one picture of each strain so that they do not keep repeating. i'm not sure if there would be a way to edit a picture out for a better quality one that better depicts that specific strain.

4: when adding a picture only include the actual picture and the name of the strain, THAT'S ALL! my goal is to just be able to scroll through the whole thread just looking at pictures with the strain name. i'm aware that there might be controversy on certain strains and the description of it but we will deal with that bridge when we get there.

5: Has to be a healthy, non-stunted and good colored discus

6: lastly, if you do plan on posting a picture please go through the thread and make sure it has not been posted already please. if you think you have a better picture then please PM me and we will try to post that one over the one that is already there.

I might be over-looking a lot of things here but this thread is meant to be more Fun than anything else. i love seeing pictures and new members would benefit from this because they might not have known there were so many strains out there to chose from ;). I'll start it off with the pictures from Walter's Discus Aquarium of Natural/Wild Species. I really hope he doesn't mind but here's the link to show the original site: http://www.aquariumhobbyist.com/discus/strains/index.html
I know i said no wilds but this is just to show where everything came from

P.S. you can download king kong image capture here for free:
http://www.kingkongcapture.com/
this is for the members who do not have a snippet tool to copy a picture that they may come across to post here. download the image capture on that link and then you can crop anything that is physically in your screen at that moment. crop just the discus you will post.

penang eruption

The fish in that photo is actually a "Shooting Star" created by Wayne Ng. Identified on page 46 of his Discus Guidebook.

I think it's important to make sure beginner's know that not all leopard snakeskin strains are "Penang Eruptions" <--- that is a specific leopard snakeskin created by Lim Pei Hao.

http://www.fishtradezone.com/index.php?act=viewDoc&docId=5

I'm seeing a few posts where people are automatically calling any leopard snakeskin fish a "Penang Eruption" and that's not fair to either Mr. Lim Pei Hao or whoever else created a specific leopard snakeskin type of fish, be it Wayne Ng or anyone else.

Hope that helps clear things up!

Walter

Hi all,
I think this is a great Thread and I am going to stick it to the top of the section. Thanks Ricardo.

Only thing I need to stress is that unless the fish belongs to you , you absolutely must get permission from the owner of that pic to use it..Its usually not a problem to do this...a simple email to the owner asking for permission.... But please do not raid other sites photos thinking they are public domain......assume they are copy right protected and act accordingly. There has been issues in the past and I really don't want history to repeat itself here with our assistance.

Thanks all,
al

ok thanks Al, i guess i never thought about it that way. people (me included) think of the net as public domain but we forget that some are protected. i will start asking members on here for permission but some of the others i got off google images and such and i'm not sure who to ask permission from in those situation?. I'd really hate to bring trouble to SD, i will review the pics i have as is and will remove any that might have been protected. thanks Al

Actually Dan in Gulf Coast Discus did have the blue SS but I did not buy them because I was tired of Blue color (don't get me wrong I'm a big fan of blue diamonds and cobalt Blues). These were sold to me as Tiger Snake Skins.

Hi Rick,
You're doing a great job here and I'm sure this thread will help many nubes figure out what strains they have or want. I would suggest however that fish without names or uncertain names not be included. Names such as "wild cross" can't be identified as any specific strain, as a wild cross can look like any discus from one end of the spectrum to the other, depending on what type of wild it is and if it's crossed with a domestic.
Also, the fish you described as probably being a Mystic is definitly not, as Mystics have the blue fins. There are other blue finned red fish with completely different names also. The un-named reds are brown based reds (or "wild type").
IMO, this thread has done a great job of naming specific strains so I'd hate to see it start to get confusing by adding unidentified fish or inaccurate guesses.
Thanks,

Kacey

ok folks whats bulldog refer to??

Well, you'll get plenty of different answers on this one but I feel the same way Andre Soh feels, it is a deformity. It is basically a super high fin discus, very short face, the eyes of the fish are somewhat larger than normal discus. All this in my observation. ;)

Is there a "breed standard" for discus? The American Kennel Club sets "standards" for all their recognises breds. In fact, I understand the AKC is discussing changing the bred standard on bulldogs back to a less extreme face so they stop breeding dogs with health issues. Are "bulldog" discus headed in the same negative directions because of their basic facial structure?

Well, I did find a "breed standard" of sorts, a judging form on Discus NADA to be used at the 2010 Discus Show in Dallas Texas. The description of the head and body clearly do not describe the "bulldog" as an exceptable shape.

Hi,

Hey there Athena! White Butterfly is the strain, a white butterfly throwback is very similar to a white butterfly but not quite. It may not be solid white, more lines in the body. It is almost a white butterfly but can't be named it due to its lack of characteristics. A white scorpion is a snakeskin variety of white butterfly, with very fine lines in the face. At least thats the best way I can describe it. :o

Nice name, its my sisters name. ;)

BTW, do white butterflies originate from pigeon blood? If they do, doesn't that mean they'll have black peppering? Why are all the pictures I've seen so far on the forum from Forest's fish so clean and beautiful?

i wouldn't have a problem with it but you would need to get the permission of every owner pic like i did. Well, most of them i asked permission for, some i couldn't find the owner since they came from google. Good luck with the project, it took me months.

I have 3 discus at the moment. a yellow diamond, a red map and a red melon. i only keep them for fun so they are not show fish by any stretch of the imagination but i love them to bits! my red map is very peppered, but the colouring of the pepper against the yellow and red is just fantastic. he is by far my favourite! but now having seen some of the variations available i think i am going to have to invest in some more! fantastic feed! thanks so much! x

New to the forum but been around discus since the early Marc Weiss days and was cruising the ID link here to see what's new in the hobby.

Since this ID sticky is supposed to be for beginners, it would be helpful to provide full names of the strains. For example on page 5, a beginner would not know what an RSG x SS is, or on page 11, what the heck are BDBD, AP, or AES?

Since this is supposed to be for beginners and encourage people, please remember the KISS principle.

Cheers.

Can someone please tell me the difference between a Fire Red and a Marlborough Red. In the pictures on Discus Hans site they look the same to me.

I recently visited Hans' operation and saw both strains in multiple sizes (I ended up buying a 4" Marboro among others). The Marlboro have some orange around the outside of their bodies and some have small white striations, whereas the Fire Reds are a deeper shade of red and more uniform in their solid colorations. Both are beautiful, eating well and have great coloration in even the smallest sizes. IMO, you cannot go wrong with either choice. Good luck!

What is the diff between a red melon and a malboro red? I am getting more an more confused after going through these fourteen pages. Some of the discus look similar but are given different names. Are these names widely accepted strains or are they named by the respective breeders according to their whims n fancies?

Larry Bugg
03-15-2012, 10:31 AM
A Malboro is more of a orange than a red. The face will be the same color as the body. The fins will quite often have a patterning of different colors. A Red Melon will be more red. The face will be a white to cream color and the fins will have no patterning although they may have some black on them. The are both pigeon based discus.

Well I have been on this site researching everything there is to know about discus's... And then I come on to this thread here.... And I would like to say *tongue n cheek* thanks for making my colors of discus's not easy to decide which one I would like when I come to getting some of my own.... :p..

So far how ever I do like the cobalt blues, turquoise blues... If i was to put say a red variety, white or a yellow variety to that mix which would be best in case they pair up they should be able to still give me some nice looking babies.. I however do not like the albino's..

I know i could stick with one colour but I want a colourful cheerful tank and these guys are it lol. And with some of the pics there are some with black around the tail's I thought black was undesirable on discus's..

Very good thread. Would be nice to see how all these strains were created.

I will second that!

Wow, 15 pages and counting. I wish I had more strains to add to my original post but I've been out of the discus scene for a while. I will try to dig up some fresh ones and get some permissions :-)

It's good to see you here again. So no more discus. What have you been up to?

Hello!
This thread has been really helpful for me to identify some of the mis-identified discus I received from the store. Could someone post pics of a red turq, blue snakeskin, sunrise, and albino cb pigeon blood? I've identified the rest through this thread, and I'm pretty sure those are my others but I'm not sure. Thanks for all the help!

Hey moon. I've basically been working with crystal red shrimp and only have 2x 10G tanks for that purpose. The other hobby that's been taking most of my spare time is photography. Pretty heavily invested so far. I have a 55g sitting empty that I've been back and forth about filling with discus...

What would you say these two are? And how much would you pay for a mated pair?

Really hard to tell Josh. A better photo may show it differently.
I'm think something like a Golden-Red Pigeon or mixed with Calico.
What does your budget allow? And is this mated pair proven? Difference in price mated or proven.

I figured they were red whites maybe with some calico.. Just in the process of starting a true fishroom and wanted to add a couple breeding pairs to the 2 that I have. They are a proven pair as well. I haven't personally seen them in person yet but just wanted to get your guys' opinion! The guy wants $150 for the pair

Its a preference thing, if you want to breed that type, then go for it.

this thread is awesome. drooled thru all 16 pages. I finally got my first, but I didnt really see him in this thread. Can I post him here for identification? or is there a separate thread for that? (or should I create it).

I have so many tanks around the house, but I'm finding myself narrowing my hobby down to specific species. Angelfish were first, but these discus are going to have me applying for loans lol

This is an amazing thread! So very helpful. I would love to see a critique of how each fish's coloring conformed to ideal, what its strengths and weaknesses are, so that when we look to purchase fish we better know how to evaluate the parents of the juvenile fish, or the fish itself, we buy. (ie does this fish have good color on a good body shape, or does this fish have "ok" color on a good body fish?)

I know this may be proprietary to some breeders but it would be cool to include the strains lineage. Trace them to say "Pigeon Blood crossed with a red turq that had the albino gene"... I just think it would add a cool depth to this thread.

Also if I may add a small critique, Have a mod go through and edit the posts to 1 post or list of them as provided by the forum picture restrictions and alphabetized in a well documented format. This is the only source on the internet for this kind of info that I have ever found and it would be a great feather in the cap of the site to be able to have its own discus "dictionary" if you will.

This is good to have for reference. If I may suggest. Re-organizing the name(s) in aplha order and also referencing some other names they are know buy might help us all locate them faster? Just a thought. Thanks for getting this started.

Happy New Year to ALL!!!!!!!!!!
