So, it's been set up for a long time but I recently removed one of the HOB's. Should I go with using prime to fix the problem or massive water changes?

Do a 50% water change and add some Aquarium Salt...

I did 90%, I'll check again tonight and add salt.

As above; Typicaly this happens when you add to the bioload or destroy part of the good bacteria. For me it was washing the filter in tap (clorinated) water. Make sure you teast for ammonia also.
Salt eliminates the danger of nitrite poisoning. I have seen recomendations from 1 teaspoon per 10g of water to 1 tablespoon per 10g of water. I have done this in the past and the fish didn't even seem to notice the salt.

... the filter you left in there is just catching up to the load...was it the same age as the one you took out?...if it is younger, just watch your nitrites don't peak off the charts..

...I use salt a 1tblespn per 10 gal too...bada bing bada boom, no nitrite doom:D

I added about 16oz but I'm gonna do another WC tonight. After tonight's water change I'll dose the way you guys have suggested.

I'd do as Dan recommended and only change 50% until the nitrites are gone. Definitely using 2 tbsp of salt per 10 gallons of water. Doing larger water changes will make it take longer for the bacteria to build. Its a balancing act that you need to stay on top of.

All the best,

Eddie

Thanks; 1.0 is not good but the fish can take it temporarily. However; better safe than sorry; Add salt; don't panic; It typicaly will go to zero in a few days. Don T.
