View Full Version : 1st Spawn
Hi Everyone,
I am new to this site (2mnths) but have learned alot already from it. Around a month ago, a bought a pr of blue turquoise from Al Sabetta (CTDiscus). Al was great. He had beautiful fish and alot of knowledge to help me along. If you have not visited Al's fish room, give him a call you will not be disappointed.
Over the last few days, the pr has been shaking and showing signs they were going to spawn. I started doing 50% wc everyday for the past 4 days and they finally spawned around 2hrs ago. I did not see the male fertilize the eggs so we will see what happens.
How long after the eggs are laid does the male have to do his thing before the eggs will not be fertilized?
Here are some pics!!

Congrats Tofe...and welcome to Simply too:) Let us know how they do.
See, to me, when I look at what you are calling a breeding 'tube' on a female, if you look really close, are actually eggs all stuck together. Obviously there would be some kind of tube inside, I've never seen a female "tube" protruding, only eggs...The male, well, more like a Ken Doll really..there's 'something' there.:D

After 24hrs should the eggs get dark in color (fertile)? How long after the eggs are laid do you get wigglers?
Tofe
Raul,
thanks
Roxanne,
I am not sure if there are eggs in the tube. Very new to this so I am not sure what it should or shouldn't look like. :D:D:D

That's some nice fish porn
~AKA~
Male must not of done his thing because over half the eggs are now white.:(:( I do not see any of the eggs turning a dark color (fertile).
I thought the pr would eat the white eggs?:confused:
Both the male and female are fanning the eggs so I guess that is a good thing. So hopefully the male will get it right next time:angel:

it seems they don't always know what they are doing, but it's so sweet how they even try to take care of their "non" eggs...better luck next time:)

My blue turqs spawned for the 2nd time last night for me. I watched but did not see the male pass over the eggs. I saw him swim by the eggs but not after ever pass of the female. We will see in 24-36hrs.

Hi Brian, perhaps he's just young. Where are you based? Can we count on seeing you at the next NE discus meet? Nice batch of eggs there! Sounds like you've got some serious reading to do! LOL
Al? Al who? :D
Hi Martha,
It was great meeting you at the last NE meeting at Mark's. I am located in Newington, CT. Once you have a date I will work on my schedule for the next meeting. As for the pr., they are around 1 1/2yr. old. I love your Blue Sapphires, are you going to be selling the babies? Let me know

Hi Brian, you're only an hour from me! I didn't realize you are so close. Yes, I will be selling the babies. :)

Brian,
What's your water parameter like, water need to be very soft, and the PH need to be right...do you have a TDS meter? a PH meter to measure your water parameter. You might need to get an RO for breeding.
Hi Martha, Let me know when you are going to sell the little ones. If I have tank space I would like some.
Flofish 89, I don't have a TDS or ph meter. I use drops to determine the GH and KH and PH. My ph is 6.8 and I only need to put in 1 to 2 drops to change the color for the GH and KH so I was told I have soft water. I need to get it tested with a meter to validate this.

It has been over 48hrs since she spawned and most of the eggs have turned white. There are still around 3 dozen eggs that are a dark orange but are surrounded by white, fungus eggs. If these eggs are fertile, will the white fungus eggs that surround them stop them from becoming wigglers?

Update, Brian? Did any hatch?
I'm happy to sell you some sapphires. I'll be posting in the Hobbyist Breeders section and on Aquabid.
Martha, None have hatched and more have turned white. I don't think the male did his job. Just not sure why it is taking so long for all of them to turn white?
PM me when you are going to start to sell them
Thanks

Maybe he'll have it together next time. :)
Can you pm me if you want some sapphires? Then I'll have a record of requests all in one place. Thanks.
