How low can you have a breeding tank? Would the tanks bottom at 18" from the floor work?

I have a space where I need to decide whether to set up another grow-out tank or some breeding tanks but it'll have to be low

While we're at it what's you preferred footprint for a breeding tank? 18" x 18"? 20" x 20"? 24" x 18"?

I think it depends on the amount of traffic you have that goes by the tank...I have a small room within my fish room that is only for breeders...The room is dimly lit and gets traffic only when I feed...My bottom row starts at 26" and the top of the tank is about 43".

18" is low in my opinion...but if you need the space I would go for it...the worst thing that you would have is an extra QT tank.

Same here Dan, dimly lit and traffic only at feeding and WC.

The thing is I'm thinking of DIY the tanks and need to know if I'll be doing 3- 20"x20" tanks or 1 or 2 larger tanks for grow out. Have 5' of space to play with. But, I realized I have/getting more discus yet only 4 20g for pairs:confused:

Here a bad pic of my only breeding rack, unfortunately I can't build it like that on this space, otherwise it would have been identical. The 75g on the bottom sits at 18"

Hi Ed,

Just my limited knowledge perhaps a cube tank for breeding 20x20x20 since you're making those tanks yourself....I got a few of cube tanks but no pairs.

You know I like those Francis;) Actually the linear fashion in which your room is arranged has influenced me a bit:p I'll be looking 20" x 20" x 16"-18" so I can stick to 1/4" glass and keep costs down:o

The height of the stand is what concerns me and may force me to a growout tank instead, any thoughts? Maybe a nice 48" x 24" x 20":D

In general, adult discus are more comfortable higher up. They are also more comfortable with a tank that is 18" front to back than 12". When I started, my breeder tanks were on top of a double rack system, while the second tier was ~30" from the floor. The bottom of the tank on the upper tier was about eye level. When new, the pairs on the upper tier did better. Over time, I eventually had discus spawning on the lower rack of a double 55 gal tank 4" off the floor. I have the belief that a pair will generally do better higher than lower, esp. new or young pairs.

I have all different types of Discus breeding with only a 2 by 4 sandwich between the ground, what ever is more comforable
to the Discus and the breeder. For public stores its better
to have the tanks high because of traffic, and prevention of
people knocking on the tanks.
