Hi,

I was just reading about sodium chloride to stop the effect of nitrite and ammonia on fish and found this study wich show that calcium chloride is better at this than sodium chloride.

I do not know much about water chimistry but why do we not use calcium chloride instead for helping against nitrites instead?

here is the reference:

Probably since you can get sodium chloride so readily, like from the kitchen table. ;)

Ok but is it possible to use either or is there a negative side of using calcium chloride?

how will it affect the water hardness etc, compared to salt?

Yup, as Graham stated it is the chloride ions we are after. Calcium chloride is just an alternative source of it. Reason why we use salt (sodium chloride) is because of how readily available it is and how cheap it is as well. As far as the calcium chloride affecting water parameters...it will raise your GH to an extent, depending on how much you add to the water and the purity of the Calcium chloride you use.
