Hello all,
Just a quick question about size for spawning tanks. I used to use 40g breeder tanks for my discus pairs, but I'm moving to a place where I can't bring that system over. I have several 30g (36x18x12) that i can easily bring. Is this ok for a breeding pair? I always thought they were kinda narrow, but then again, I've never tried.

The other plan is to reseal my 75g and seal in a glass partition and use it for 2 pairs, but it's gonna be a while before that happens :)

(oh, btw the 'pairs' don't exist yet, I've got some teenagers on the go and a breeder has some pairs I'm going to see soon)

I have used 40g for breeder tank before .. but I have to lower the water level to almost half ... so I think a 20G tank will be perfect .. As a matter of fact ... I setup my fish room in the garage with four 20g breeder tank.

I use 30 galon Oceanic cubes for breeding tanks , they have worked very well . Of course I would like to use 40 gallon breeder tanks but the space is constricted.

I've had successful spawnings in tanks ranging from 18 to 55 gallons. My standard breeding tank size is a 20H. That's what Jack Wattley uses, and his books are where I learned the most about discus breeding. If I were to partition off a 75 gallon, I'd make 3 compartments.

17x16x17 works just fine for me.

The only problem I find with a 20H is the water quality problem, I get lazy sometimes and the 20 gets pretty dirty quick . The size looks perfect except for the upkeep , that is the only thing .
Now , I am no expert but I see everything I buy or change always in total relation to maintenance .

I am useing 30gals and I think they are great. Both for size and water quality issues. As always you get a very wide range of ideas when you ask qustions like that. But you get a good Idea about what everyone is using and what is working for them. Good luck and I would go with what you have in the 30gals.

I also use 20 gallon tanks. I have breed in 40 breeders but find that they fry end up all over the place. I agree with Roberto that if you use a 20 you need to be more diligent with the water quality. When I set up my breeder room I thought about using 29 gallon tanks but the space would not permit so I went with the 20H.
