Hi there! Welcome to simply discus!

You could do 5 or 6 comfortably. Maybe up to 8 with a real strict water change routine.

Cheers!

I recommend 5-6 if you are new to Discus.

I agree with everyone too. I would say 6 at most and you will have to keep up with the water changes.

8 is way to many IMO if you are talking about adults. Even with strict water changes there simply isn't enough room for territories to be established and adults will want to pair off. I'm not sure of the dimensions of a 50g, but I have a 55g and I wouldn't put more than 6 adults in that with strict water changes. I don't think 13" for depth from front to back is ample for them to feel comfortable. I like a 75g tank as the minimum for a group of adult discus. A mated pair would be fine in a 20H or a 29g, but I don't like the idea of anything less than a 75g for adults. Based on the "rule of thumb" you could do 5 discus in your 50g, possibly 6 with strict water changes. I wouldn't do it though.

Yes. I don't know where I got it in my head you were growing out juvies. Definately no more than 5 or 6 adults with strict water changes.

Not to go against the grain, or maybe I am, but I have 9 Discus in a 46G Bowfront. Water changes as necessary, sometimes 80% every other day, and sometimes 80% in 4-5 days, depending on what's fed to them. My water seems to have low TDS, GH, and KH so it's possible for me, your water may vary.

Discus vary in size from 6" to 3.5"

General rule of thumb for discus is 10 gals per discus.

Depending on w/c's I'd go no more then 6 Adults. If you are putting additional items in the tank I would reduce this number by 1-2.

Ahmed ;)

The TDS, GH, and KH have nothing to do with how often the water should be changed, nor does it enable you to magically keep more discus in a smaller tank. You are setting yourself up for a disaster if you think that 9 will do well in anything smaller than a 75g tank.

If it's planted I'd do at least 75% per week. If it's not planted I'd do 20 gallons every 2-3 days.
