Hello everyone. i have had juvi discus for about 2 1/2 months now. When do they start to color up. They are about 2 2 1/2 inches now. They are developing color on the fins but real slow. Thank you

It really depends on the strain, what type do you have?

i got them from a local breeder. I do not know what strain they are but here is a link to Hongda (seller)

They are a cross between a Alenquer and a blue golden leopard.

That is interesting cross so there is no telling how the fry will turn out. May need to ask the breeder how the fry developed as they aged. The parents are gorgeous.

Take care,

Eddie

I'd expect the Alenquer genes to dominate almost completely in that kind of a cross, but I'm no expert, at all...

Because I feel also the fish will be mostly Alenquers, which are a "natural" red strain, that it will take several months to really develop color. Usually starting in the top and bottom fins of the fish, then into the body. Looking at the pics, you should have VERY nice fish! When I kept them they looked like your average Brown Discus for awhile, then the color started to come in later. The addition of natural color enhancers(TETRABITS) helps to bring it out more...but not faster IME...Bill

The parents look beautiful, good luck in raising your discus fishes as beautiful as the parents :)

Fabulous looking parent fish. The juv's should start colouring around the 3inch. Keep the w/c's up & you will have some stunners. :D Keep us posted with pics, would love to see how they turn out!

Ahmed ;)

Thank you everyone,
They are developing color from the out side fins and working into the body. The color is coming slow but its coming. I change 25% of the water everyone 2 days. As soon as i can get some time i will take some pictures or better yet ill see if i had can get my brothers HD video recorder.

I suspect that one of the things breeders look for in their future breeding stock is fish that color up early. It's a very desirable trait, a huge marketing advantage. Wild fish don't need marketing advantages, so they tend to color up later, and Alenquers are essentially wild fish...

I think these fish will be an amazing surprise as they become adults. A Golden Leopard X Alanquer. That is a very interesting mix. I will be anxious to see them.

All the best with them,

Eddie

I feed spectrum to mine and although not wild they are really coming through with some colour. I found this link on utube and it looks like ana mazing tank. Shame we don get wilds here in Australia

Good, I had two, one recently died . I picked him up at pets plus in londonderry. If you take exit 4 on 93N and take a left off the exit. Keep going until you get to crossroads mall. They are next to the movie rental place. The owner is awesome. He should still have some in stock but they are pretty expensive...
