Alright, I know this is going to sound silly, but I've spent f o r e v e r trying to go through all the pics and threads on different strains to figure out what is what and I am sooo confused still LOL. Can someone just list for me the strains that are blue fish with red patterns? I know those are the ones I like and then I can concentrate my research efforts at least. And what is the difference between cobalts and blue turquoise?

Thanks in advance from a confused noob,
Nicole ;)

Thanks :)

I did look through that thread several times. It just seems like every time I find a picture of a fish I like and run a search on the strain it is labeled as, if find a zillion pictures of fish that look completely different form each other all labeled the same. Off to search on red turquoise!

Thanks for the help. On this (http://www.aquariumhobbyist.com/discus/strains/index.html) website, the fish labeled as "blue turquoise" is exactly what I want. The "red turquoise" there don't look like the pics posted here. Gaahhh!

Do "blue turquoise" like the one pictured on that site go by any other name?

I promise I'll get it eventually LOL

Yes NicoleRC in several cases Discus that are the same can have different names depending on who is breeding or selling them.

I have seen the same Discus sold under several names IE: German Blue Turquoise, Brilliant Turquoise, Brilliant Blue, as well as several "other" names that escape me at the moment some Discus of the same strain or even out of the same spawn are even sold as one name or another depending on if they are more Blue or Greenish Blue.

I believe Brilliant Turquoise or Brilliant Blue is what you are looking for and as already mentioned Discus Hans has very nice Brilliant Turquoise for sale. ~IHTHU~

NicoleRC just a quick suggestion, In case you plan on buying young discus you could ask a breeder for a picture of the parents of any discus that you might be interested in so that you will know what they should look like full grown. ~Just A Suggestion~ In any case Best of luck to You and Your future Discus

Very good advice. I would just like to add, make sure you see pics of the ACTUAL fish you want to buy. A pic of the pair is helpful. Tho I see many "questionable" breeders who ONLY show you a pic of the "pair"...but not the offspring. Save yourself a bunch of grief(and money) and buy from one of the sponsors on here. Seriously...Bill

Thanks guys for the great advice. I'm definitely going to order from a sponsor here, probably Hans since he has the brilliants! I want to get good stock to get me off on the right foot. I'm so excited :D

As a new discus guy I am right there with you in the confusion of the names, and the colors, and so forth. I'm finding out also that the color can vary based on how bright the lighting is, how dark or light the background or substrate is, and even the pH!

I bought recently from Kenny Cheung (who's link is shown up above for his June shipment). Superlative fish! Now, when I went to buy them in Kenny's more light-subdued, higher pH, bare-bottom tanks, three of the ones I bought were almost pale-white with striping and patterns but nothing I would call BLUE in person: Eruption Leopard, Tiger/Checkboard Turquoise, and Leopard Snakeskin. But once home and in my planted tank with the darker substrate and lower pH their colors REALLY changed. In fact three of them would qualify as deep BLUE in my book. But each is a different BLUE.

My Eruption Leopard is a rich turquoise blue
The Tiger/Checkboard is an almost purplish-blue
The Leopard Snakeskin is almost a greenish-blue.

Now, these are all in my opinion and also are comparing them each side by side so their more subtle blue palette is more evident. Each on their own might be called blue but when next to each either the nuances and color descriptions I provide are more evident.

See this thread to see a photo of my three BLUE discus I'm describing here:

http://forum.simplydiscus.com/showthread.php?t=72358

Then go here and see the exact fish as they looked when I bought them from Kenny:

http://forum.simplydiscus.com/showthread.php?t=72162

Hope I'm not being even more confusing here for you!

Lastly, I HIGHLY recommend Kenny! Top-notch fish, and top-notch fella too! Really consider buying from him. Heck, call him. He'll be very helpful and effusive with advice by phone.
