What do you use to attach plants to driftwood?

In the past, I've tried to attach java ferns to my driftwood with fish line but it never attached to it after several months. Could it be because the roots weren't growing (I don't have CO2)? Or is there a better way to attach them? I also want to attach anubias.

I attach anubias with fishing line and never had any problems, ever.
