I'm curious to see what you're water change routine is. You're response is greatly appreciated!

Every 2-3 days 60%-75% on my barebottom
Every 7-10 days 70% on my low tech planted.

Not sure what you are trying to gather because everyone setup/goals will be different.

David,

You know how I voted. LOL! Weekly. Between 50 and 80%.

Best wishes!

Changing 90-95% daily. Could do every other day now that they are getting older and I'm not feeding as often. But, I enjoy cleaning the tank and they like the wc. It's my quiet time to mellow out.

What is your thinking behind your wc regime? I currently have a low tech planted and soon to have a bb tank aslo. I was thinking of doing the wc's exactly opposite of your method. I was going to do 60% 2x a week in the planted and 75% 1 time per week in the bb. I was thinking that the planted tank needed more wc's as I cant remove the detritus as efficiently from the bottom. I want to make sure Im not overlooking anything.

Thanks,
Pat

Pat,

You've got it a bit backwards. The plant use nutrients in the water and they thrive on the detritus. Changing water in a palnted tank less often is better IMO. The bare bottom tanks have nothing to "compliment" the filtration process, so removing solids is necessary.

I have both types of tanks. My bare bottom tanks get filthy quickly. My planted tanks don't. Weird. LOL!

Read Chad's response.

I also don't stock my planted tank like I do with the BB. Lots of rummy and a few pleco but not a dozen of discus with no other fish to pick up excess food.

Daily 100%, never skip a beat. At the moment, 200% daily since I have no bio and I am feeding heavy. :D

Every 6-9 days - so not exactly weekly. I replace 3/4 tank roughly.

Every day or two, I will suction out a bucket of waste water. I use a rigid 1/2in tube connected to a flexible hose to siphon out poop which inevitably draws up some sand. I rinse the sand and dump it back into the tank.

Almost every day, I use another section of 1/2in tube as a pipette to surgically remove large chunks of poop.

With a good biofilter, is 100% water change daily really needed?

For my grow outs, I change 75-80% daily because they are being fed aggressively and it is a BB tank. For planted discus tanks I do a weekly change of about 75-80%. The adults are only fed 1-2 x day and the planted tanks are stocked low. Between the very increased bio of the planted loaded tanks and the understocking, this works just fine.

THe survey doesn't allow for the specifics of whether you are asking for feedback on juvies or adults...and in what setting, thus my clarifications.

BEst regards, good thread.

Hi Harriett,

When setting up the survey there are only a max of 10 choices. I would need more than one survey to provide sufficient detail, so hence the general approach.

Thanks for providing your detail in your reply. I find folk's replies more interesting and informative anyway.

Take care,
