Would a 48" x 24" x 13" aquarium work for discus. How important is a tall tank for discus?

It should be fine for discus 48x24x13 equals to 64.47368 US gallons and have friends using this set up.

My scorps are now adults, I suppose, considering that I have a pair spawning, if unsuccessfully. That certainly doesn't make me an expert.

Actual water depth on a 12" tall tank is really a little less- there's the rim, the bottom glass, and usually an air space below that- call it more like 11"...

When my discus go to jousting, play chase and peck, the favored escape direction for the less dominant fish is often vertical, something lost in too short a tank..

I probably wouldn't keep adults in anything shorter than 16", but that's just me... at least not permanently.

Thanks for your responses, I decided against the shallow tank.
