Hi all,
Just took a few pics of some juvenile F1 "rotkeil" severums I am growing out to breed.. These are fast becoming my favorite non-discus cichlid.:)

pics aren't the best as I used my old knock around coolpix but Theres a few decent shots showing their colors well.

Cool looking fish Al. Good luck breeding them!

Nice! None of them show the red yet? That's kind of unusual. Usually by now they're red behind the gills.

Be careful when these things start paring up--they get downright vicious. I had a half dozen F0s in a 90g, and when two paired up, they tore the other four up!

Thanks Guys!

Ryan, these guys are still young and I've never grown them out before so I've no clue what to expect developmentally... I guess time will tell...maybe I should feed them prawn:)

Alex.. I think I have the potential for 3 pairs here... and I plan on keeping just one pair;):D I'll be watching..thanks!

It's been several year since I had Severums, but another thing I recall is that I had 3 larger fish and 3 medium size fish, and thought sure I had picked out three males and three females based on the size and coloration. As it turned out, two of the bigger fish (which I thought were both males), paired up and produced babies.

Lol... At this point I know I have at least one female.. Shes layed eggs 2x now... and had one of the others guarding them...but nothing came of it.

Gotta ask, before she layed eggs, did you think she was female?

Based on size and finnage...yes...but who knows..:)

I do have to brag though...I think I am pretty proficient at sexing fish.... I am always right in my guesses at least 50% of the time;):D:D

Usually if they have red squiggles on the face, they are males. Females almost always have a solid blue/green/gray face.

I had the good fortune of seeing these fish two weeks ago. They look spectacular...nosurprise considering who is keeping them

I can across an article yesterday that stated the following

Severums mature quite slowly, and it may be almost two years before the young will breed. Expect at least another year after that before the males show their best colors. On the other hand severums are one of the longer lived aquarium fish and you can expect to keep your fish for well over ten years.

So Al you have another 2 years to wait to experience true beauty
