Ok my grow out 40 gallon was at 73 this morning. The heater went bad over night. I have changed out the heater and did a wc. Do you think this will have any growth affect on the fish?

No, it will not affect their growth. They will probably be just fine--watch them closely, feed per usual, stay on top of your water changes--if anything, it was be a stresser so potentially could push them into an illness; monitor for anything unusual popping up. Bummer but not that big a deal that the heater went.
Best regards,
Harriett

Raise the temp. slowly again, not from 73 direct up to 86, let the new heater slowly heat it up again (if I'm not to late)

If you have a 3-5 watts/ gallon heater, just set the temp you want, let it do its job. If it's bigger, you may need to slow it down.
If it's a lot bigger, you have the wrong heater, anyway...
