I am very seriously considering upgrading my current 240 cube tank to a 575 gallon concave tank with dimensions of 120" long x 24"/18" wide x 42" tall.
I am looking for aquacaping/planting/stocking ideas for very large and very tall tanks.
Anyone have any links to images of such discus tanks for inspiration?!!
To be honest, I'm also considering going back to saltwater and turning this big tank into a reef, but if I can find the right inspiration to stick with discus, that's what I'll do!

Thank you very much Wahter!
Those are the kind of pics/inspiration I was looking for!
I was very close to changing my mind with this tank and going with a fish only saltwater set up; large angels, tangs, colorful wrasses, but seeing those beautiful discus tanks and all that 'green' may have just swayed me back!

I wonder where they get those interesting back grounds? I love the faux rockscapes on some of those tanks. I would need to do something like that for this tank so I wouldn't have to scrape the back pane all the time.:o

Any suggestions on aquascaping a tall narrow tank? This tank is 42" tall and only 18" deep in the center, flaring out to 24" at the ends.
How can I elevate the plants, yet keep them in suitable substrate, and still look natural?
Ideas?

Here's a pic of the tank, my quick rendering of the surround cabinetry I'll be building for it, and a couple more shots with someone standing next to it for 'scale'.

That is awsome!!!

Hope we get to see heaps of pix of that going together.

I cant really thank how you would scape that but would kill to try, probably mean instant divorce in my house though ;)

It would look great as a reef but I'm not a salty so IMO keep it as a discus / amazonian theme.

Can't wait to see the pics as this one comes together. Maybe you need to find an amazing pce of driftwood to start??

So, you guys think this can be a successful discus/semi planted tank?
I'm really wanting to make it as spectacular as possible, but keep it as low maintenance as possible as well. I don't mind water changes or keeping it clean, but I just don't have time for all kinds of dosing and such. So, I guess I'll need to look for plants that I can let grow wild and really tall, right?:)

If maintenance needs to be low, why not make it a bio type tank with a natural flooded forest theme? Lots of wood, but no plants, or just floating plants. Large planted tanks are a lot of trouble maintenance wise. Been there, done that. Nice tank by the way.

Hi Darrell.
I've looked into those types of tanks, but I am really drawn to the wonderful shades of green that the plants provide. I'm not talking filling the tank end to end and top to bottom with plants, just enough to make it look somewhat natural and fill in the water column some.

Who built that thing? What size are the drain bulkheads, 2"? I love big tanks.:)

Sorry for the derail but...

Are maintenance requirements the same for large tanks? Seems if they are that would be a huge ammount of water down the drain.

I am pretty certain that I won't be doing 50% water changes daily or even weekly on a tank this size! :)
Maybe, just maybe, I'll consider 50% monthly. But, I don't expect to push the bioload of this tank too high so that will help.
