Hi

I am planning to keep discus. I was thinking 6 or more.

My current tank is about 250 Liters, however I want them in a new tank.
Do discus do better in a tall tank or a longer less deep tank? The longer tank being about 45 cm tall. Or better yet how deep does a tank need to be for a adult discus?

Thanks

I prefer a long over a tall, easier to clean.

Thanks, just what I wanted to hear. How big is your tank? I need an idea of what size to build.

Hi Ryan

How many Discus would you like to keep?

As a rule of thumb, allow 10 gallons per Discus.

I have a 125 gallon tank, and I only keep one pair in it. BUt I could keep 12, if I so choose.

Build it bigger than you think you want. :)

Thanks for the replies.

Is that US Gallons? 1 Gallon = 3.785412 Liters

So I need 37.85 liters per discus.
Then six discus need a 227.12472 liter tank

125 Gallons = 473.1765 liters!

Ok so Ill probally go for 400 liters.

Welcome to SD Ryan!

Discus tend to claim horizontal territory instead of vertical so longer is better when it comes to tanks.

If you are ordering, contact the seller, and they may email you pictures of the fish in the tank.

I can expect to pay Pula 170. Thats about 28.33 Dollars per fish. What do you pay for a common discus in US?

It depends on size and strain. It can vary widely.

I like the red and blue turquoise discus. I can get hold of them too. Are they a good type to start off with?

I'd say 24 inch (60 cm) deep tanks are ideal for discus, loosely planted and a bit darker than normal, this depth allows you to use protruding roots better, which discus prefer for hiding. IMO

My advice to you regarding what types; go with the ones you like.
