I just have a general question...I want to make my own recipe but I have noticed that everyone runs the beefheart through a meat grinder first then mixes it with other stuff in a blender or food processor...What my question is do I need to use a meat grinder for the beefheart or can I just use a blender or food processor?

I used just a processor with no problem. Just cut it into small pieces first.

I used to use a food processor in the past but prefer the meat grinder now. The meat grinder tends to get everything down to a good size for the fish to eat. A food processor is inconsistent in getting all the pieces small enough and may get a few big chunks here and there.

So can use a meat grinder to mix everything up or is it just to grind the meat?

Smae here. I'm on the look out for a meat grinder as the processor either missed too many pieces or if processed more to compensate ends of making it almost too fine or almost liquifying it....

I use the meat grinder for everything. I grind the shrimp twice, add the heart chunks and other ingredients and then grind 2 or 3 more times, thats it.

I found a cheap sportsman grinder that works well but I will be upgrading to better one in the future. I want one with a fine attachment. The sportsman is great though, and its 50 bucks.

I am not sure about the types walmart sells but mine is 250 watts and its okay, I'd like something in the 500 watt range and I want a fine attachment. This is just my preference. I'd like something stronger and faster........you know, just like cars. :D

I have found that if you first cube the BH to small chunks, then add liberal amounts of flakes (any kind, I use Omega spirulina), ground up pellets (unused Sera pellets ground into powder for me) and ground up vitamin pills (men's one a day),then the whole thing can be done quite well in a regular food processor. All that stuff binds the meat together so that the blades can get at the meat....as the blade slices and minces, all the stuff I listed above pulls the fragmented BH back into big clumps in the container, to be slashed again by the blade. Once the mix is minced to a consistency that I want, I then add peprika, crushed garlic and boiled spinach for more dicing and slashing in the processor. I have made many seafood mix and Bh mixes this way using just the food processor from Walwart ($35 forgot what brand), and the mix turns out perfectly for my discus. Both adults and juvies love the mixes and have no trouble making their bellies round and full. HTH. mike:)

In my view, using a meat grinder first is necessary to homogenize the food so that it blends well with the other ingredients and the fish get the entire nutritional value.

I place the beef heart thought the meat grinder 3 times using the small hole attachment. The consistency looks like hamburger meat ready for the grill.

I then blend the other ingredients in the mixer (food processor) using water with gelatin (spinach, peas, carrots, shrimp, vitamins).

I then add the beef heart to the overall 'soup' and mix high for short bursts - testing every few seconds to make sure the beef heart is not liquiefied, but is still 'bits'. The reason for this last step (testing phase) is so that the other ingredients can bind with the beef heart as a composite and not separate out when I place in the aquarium.

I then place the mixture in freezer bags in thin slabs so I can create cubes (look likes sugar cubes when done) easily after freezing.

After I cut the 'slabs' into cubes, they are ready to feed to the discus.

What I notice is that when I throw a partially defrosted cube into the water, the discus and tetras attack it and bits of food break off and the bits are composite beef heart, spinach, etc. not just beef heart by itself. Each bite by the fish gets the entire nutritional package off the cube. And the gelatin binds it nicely so that there is no fouling of the tank.

Because I have 200 hundred tetras swarming the mouths of the discus - every bit that flies off the cube gets consumed before the beef heart ever gets to the floor of the aquarium.

I have used this recipe on all of my breeding tanks over the years. I don't breed anymore, but love the colors and growth I am getting from my juvenile discus for my show tank using beef heart. I also feed tetra bits and frozen/sterilized blood worms from time to time, but it is the beef heart which does the magic.

A basic beefheart mix has Bh+ shrimp and other ingredients and vitamens ... but theres no reason why you can't also add fish as well or in lieu of shrimp....If you do, best to use salt water fish over fresh ( minimizes parasites)

Really? May I ask why?

I've tried - the meat in heart muscle is extraordinarily tough. When you get some beef heart, try pulling it apart. This is the muscle that must work continuously for the life of any animal. As a result it is strong.

What we want to do when we 'grind' it - is tear apart this muscle. There are two ways to do this. By Hand (hand meat grinder) and by a machine (electric motor). One of the advantages of an electric meat grinder is it will give you consistent results. A hand grinder will not.

Would a manual meat grinder work?

I use an electric meat grinder now, however when i first started in the hobby i used a manual grinder for the first few years. It worked just as well in my opinion, just took alot more out of you physically. Cut the heart into small cubes, makes it abit easier.
Kind Regards,

Yes, you can. Make sure you are using the correct amounts of medication by weight. You can cause early organ failure in fish by overdosing.

You'll have to research the amount of medication required. For example, 100mg of X per pound of food. All medications have specific amounts for oral dosing. Its not about throwing meds into a mix for just in case. Every medication has a purpose and a specific amount.

You can use a gelatin but if you use alot of shrimp in a mix, thats all the binder you need.

It works very well for me. I brought sliced beef heart from local Food4Less supermarker and mix in seafood and other ingredients. Every other months I use this machine to mix 8 to 9 lbs of Beef Heart Mix. I added a little water for the mix and grind it almost to a paste. Then put them in a freezer until it's hard, then cut them into cubes and freeze them.

Definitely don't do that as it will be a waste. The medicated pellet contains the proper/effective concentration. Mixing the pellets into a mix will dilute the concentration and ultimately reduce/eliminate its efficacy.
